Landmark East Project: Introduction

The landmark east international ideas competition was open to anyone with the ability to develop and deliver a visionary idea for a landmark – a sustainable icon representing the region to the rest of the world. The judges were looking for ideas that would attract significant funding, stimulate tangible economic benefit and inspire a sense of pride and unity in the region.

The East of England Development Agency (EEDA) is the regional development agency for the East of England. It takes the strategic lead in promoting the sustainable economic development of the region which comprises Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Its vision is:
"to make the East of England a world class economy, renowned for its knowledge base, the creativity and enterprise of its people and the quality of life of all who live and work here."
A world class landmark would help put the East of England on the map and make a contribution to the future prosperity of the region by generating significant economic benefits.
The East of England Development Agency (EEDA) is taking the lead role in an ambitious project to help create a major landmark in the East of England – landmark east -

Landmark east is a big opportunity for the East of England to showcase the region’s unique assets to the rest of the world with something iconic and  sustainable. Research commissioned by EEDA found that there was a lack of identity or sense of belonging – nothing anchoring people to the region as a whole.
As it is such a disparate region, it may be that a series of landmarks can achieve this more effectively than one - or perhaps one landmark as a focal point with connections/satellites in different parts of the region.
